Gang Violence Linked to Social Roots

9 08 2009

This is one of the best articles on gang violence I have ever read.  Its so good I am blogging it everywhere I hang out in the cyberworld.

First of all this article tells the truth that most gangbangers “age” out of the gang which makes the need for long Prison times just silly.  There is no reason to give life sentences for selling rock on the block and 15 to life is way to serious for selling crack or any drug.

I know brothers who are serving life sentences in Prison not for murder or rape or any other violent crime but for selling crack cocaine the state cracks down on them by giving them tough state sentence and thanks to Joe, the cracker, Biden we now have to worry about fed time on top of the State time.  So yes Virginia you can get life in Prison for selling crack.

People want to throw the gangbangers in prison but not deal with the real problems that are the true cause of Street gangs incredible poverty, parental drug abuse, racism, sexism, and hunger.

Poverty and hunger are more then likely going to never be solved but what everyone can do is donate food to the food pantry.  Poverty will never be solved but the answer is a little bit Democrat and a little bit Republican that is the only way any anti poverty program has a chance to work.  A little bit of Government and a little bit of Social Services including faith based also works.  In the ghetto we see both and always have.  Neither party is right about poverty they both work and they work better together.

Schools need to make sure that their teachers are properally prepared to teach precious innercity children so that the teachers do not ruin the children they are supposed to teach. Teachers have to step up to the plate and stop insulting children and never tell a child they are not going to be shyt.  The teachers would never do that to a middle class person but they will do that to the innercity children regardless of their color.  Teachers if they want to educate need to discover the culture of the children they teach or step aside and allow people who care teach our children.  Now things are better because of the Republicans insisting that our children do not deserve to be forced to stay in failing schools and started with the voucher program.  This is a good program and much better for our kids then the failing public schools that a lot of innercity children are forced to attend.

We need more mentors for both males and females people from the community who made it, people from outside the community.  There are rewards for being a mentor that doesn’t translate into dollar and cents but your reflection in the mirror looks great.

Teenage Girls and Gangs

25 07 2009

This is an excellent article. So why does a young homegirl decide to become a gang member. Perhaps she has been victimized her whole life and the homeboys and homegirls are the only one to show the child some love.

This article explains a lot of what happens to a girl in the gang and not all girls are sexed in some our jumped in.  It doesn’t go into details of why would a girl or a boy become a gang member.

Most gang members started out living in extreme poverty.  Most of them had no parents because their dad is in prison and their mom is on drugs.   It is often an empty belly as well as lack of parental supervision and feeling a need for love.  The gang bangers know this and they show the young homie love and acceptance.

Money is not going to fix this problem. Kids need mentoring.  People in the hood often feel as though they are alone in the world or that no one cares rather they live or die.

My Hood lost Another Home Boy Two Weeks Ago Today

22 07 2009

Two weeks ago today a 17 year old home boy was shot to death and killed.  He was shot and left to die in a parking lot.

I mourn with his mother and I had to hold my baby girl in my arms while she mourned for her friend. I am sick of the dying and I want to know why the media has ignored this for so long.

I am sick of women losing  their children to violence in the streets. Young men are killing each other everyday. The result of that is always one in the ground and one in Prison for the rest of their life. Two lives ended with one bad decision.

The media says nothing while millions of young men are murdered every year.  When will America wake up?

I am a 44 year old woman who has lived in the “hood” all my life. My hood is a place called North Braddock outside of Pittsburgh, PA.  My neighborhood is a combination of POOR African Americans and POOR Whites.  Everyone in my neighborhood is affected by the same problems and the poor whites have the same chances of leaving the hood as the African Americans do.  They are as likely as African Americans to join the Street gangs that inhabit our neighborhoods and they are as likely to sell crack cocaine as the African Americans. The problems are not a black problem or a brown problem but a hood problem.

I was 22 years old when crack and the Crips first arrived in my neighborhood.  I was a young street wise woman who made her money hustling and selling drugs. During that time I sold marijuana.  I started talking to this man from LA who told me he was a Crip.  He then explained to me what a Crip was.  I was jumped into the gang three weeks later.  What made me a mother of four young children join a street gang and start selling a new drug called “Crack”?  It was the lure of money more money then I ever saw in my lifetime.  Finally, I had enough money to buy my kids designer clothes and I could also wear the latest outfits.  I had no clue as to the effect that drug would have on my community.

I began to realize that selling crack cocaine was slowly stealing my soul. I was selling poison to my own people.  People who lived in the neighborhood.  I remember refusing to sell that to “Whites” because unless they lived in the neighborhood the Government would arrest me for that. That is what the law did. They didn’t care about you selling this poison to your own people but they sure didn’t want you to sell it to “Whites”.

I became inactive in the Street gang and stopped selling drugs. I was lucky I never got caught and have a clean criminal record.

In 1988 the Democratic congress passed the Rockefeller drug law. This law gave an additional five years for people who sold Crack then those that sold powder cocaine.  This law resulted in millions of young men from our communities being locked up for years.  I watched men I have known for a long time spend years in Prison for selling Crack when the people that sold Powder Cocaine were giving a slap on the wrist.  This law was one of the most racist and classist laws on the books. It also resulted in Genocide.  This law was the law of the land for 20 years.

Crack also brought with it a war which resulted in millions of young men dying in the hood.  Whomever brought in the crack also brought in weapons so we can kill each other off.  That is exactly what happened we began killing each other off.  Now our neighborhoods are polluted with a drug and a war and no one hears our screams.  We need to stop the violence but how are we going to succeed when you mix poor boys with big money it is hard for our young men and women to stop selling this drug.
