My Hood lost Another Home Boy Two Weeks Ago Today

22 07 2009

Two weeks ago today a 17 year old home boy was shot to death and killed.  He was shot and left to die in a parking lot.

I mourn with his mother and I had to hold my baby girl in my arms while she mourned for her friend. I am sick of the dying and I want to know why the media has ignored this for so long.

I am sick of women losing  their children to violence in the streets. Young men are killing each other everyday. The result of that is always one in the ground and one in Prison for the rest of their life. Two lives ended with one bad decision.

The media says nothing while millions of young men are murdered every year.  When will America wake up?

President elect Barack Obama and his wife Michelle have decided to send Sasha and Melita to Sidwell Friends a very exclusive Private school that charges $35,000  a year tuition.

The DC public schools are among the worst in the Country so no one blames the Obama’s for wanting the best education for their children yet Barack Obama is against vouchers for poor children because he is beholden to the unions that staff these schools.  This is my problem with Politicians especially Democrats who do not really want to fix the public schools and oppose programs like vouchers because of their dependence on teachers unions.

A good bit of the public school teachers cannot answer basic questions without looking at Lesson plans.  Some are glorified baby sitters.  The schools are often falling apart with very little order.

I grew up in one of these schools and a good bit of the teachers that teach in these schools are wonderful teachers who must teach without books are equipment.  They know these children come from neighborhoods that are often war zones and not every child has breakfast in the morning.   School at least in the elementary school setting can often be a safe haven from life in the hood.  A good teacher can motivate these children and actually spark an interest in education.  They do so on a wing and a prayer.

There are other teachers in this school that doesn’t either know what they are doing or do not care what they teach or not because they have tenure.  These teachers wouldn’t pass a simple math test or any other test.  Yet they work for years destroying the lives of millions of kids who with education can leave the hood behind instead they install this sense in these children that education is not for them.  This leads for the children to lose interest in schools and in getting an education.  These teachers must be replaced but as long as the unions are there they will never improve.

It is time that the Public schools be given an option get rid of these terrible teachers and fix the buildings  or lose the Public dollars to private schools.

I am a 44 year old woman who has lived in the “hood” all my life. My hood is a place called North Braddock outside of Pittsburgh, PA.  My neighborhood is a combination of POOR African Americans and POOR Whites.  Everyone in my neighborhood is affected by the same problems and the poor whites have the same chances of leaving the hood as the African Americans do.  They are as likely as African Americans to join the Street gangs that inhabit our neighborhoods and they are as likely to sell crack cocaine as the African Americans. The problems are not a black problem or a brown problem but a hood problem.

I was 22 years old when crack and the Crips first arrived in my neighborhood.  I was a young street wise woman who made her money hustling and selling drugs. During that time I sold marijuana.  I started talking to this man from LA who told me he was a Crip.  He then explained to me what a Crip was.  I was jumped into the gang three weeks later.  What made me a mother of four young children join a street gang and start selling a new drug called “Crack”?  It was the lure of money more money then I ever saw in my lifetime.  Finally, I had enough money to buy my kids designer clothes and I could also wear the latest outfits.  I had no clue as to the effect that drug would have on my community.

I began to realize that selling crack cocaine was slowly stealing my soul. I was selling poison to my own people.  People who lived in the neighborhood.  I remember refusing to sell that to “Whites” because unless they lived in the neighborhood the Government would arrest me for that. That is what the law did. They didn’t care about you selling this poison to your own people but they sure didn’t want you to sell it to “Whites”.

I became inactive in the Street gang and stopped selling drugs. I was lucky I never got caught and have a clean criminal record.

In 1988 the Democratic congress passed the Rockefeller drug law. This law gave an additional five years for people who sold Crack then those that sold powder cocaine.  This law resulted in millions of young men from our communities being locked up for years.  I watched men I have known for a long time spend years in Prison for selling Crack when the people that sold Powder Cocaine were giving a slap on the wrist.  This law was one of the most racist and classist laws on the books. It also resulted in Genocide.  This law was the law of the land for 20 years.

Crack also brought with it a war which resulted in millions of young men dying in the hood.  Whomever brought in the crack also brought in weapons so we can kill each other off.  That is exactly what happened we began killing each other off.  Now our neighborhoods are polluted with a drug and a war and no one hears our screams.  We need to stop the violence but how are we going to succeed when you mix poor boys with big money it is hard for our young men and women to stop selling this drug.

Barack Obama became the President elect of the US and African American males in the ghettos of America should rejoice because they can become anything they want?

Obama’s Presidency is seen as symbolic to a lot of young men in the ghetto because black men can no longer claim that only white men can become President.  A lot of men in the inner city know that Barack Obama  is not from the hood and has lived a pretty privileged life compared to them.

Barack Obama doesn’t know what it is like to wonder if you will see your 21ST birthday.  Barack doesn’t know what it is like to be a child who’s mom is hooked on crack,  your father is in prison,  your brother is in the gang.  He doesn’t know what it like to not have anything to eat.  They know his life is far from theirs.

Barack needs to do more then preach about self responsibility. He needs to concentrate on inner city issues.  My thought is that because he is not from the hood he will not find our issues important to him.  We are going to have to address this with him as 95% of the hood voted for him.  Are we going to just give him another vote even if he does nothing for the hood in return.

This blog is for everyone who has ever been to a house party. How about spending entire nights playing spades with a group of friends?  This is for my brothers and sisters who live in the hood or in the Projects.

I represent the hood of North Braddock.  I spent five years living in the Projects known as Hawkins Village.  I love both of these hoods.

I know what it is like growing up in a neighborhood where everyone has written off the Residents except for the people who live in these places.  We know how to turn lemons into lemonade.

This blog would like to force politicians in both parties to pay attention to the problems of the hood.

This blog is not anti rap I recognize that rap music which I have a lot of respect for is the only voice the hood has.

Hello world!
